CABLE CONSTRUCTION

This is Cable Construction and not Strand construction. Cable is made of Strands. Strands are made of wire. These two construction types are used on all three cable types (1 x1 9, 7x7, 7xl9). Two Layer construction has what is referred to as a "Strand Center" rather than strand because the individual wires are all twisted in the same direction. When this "strand center" is used for Multi Strand cable it is referred to as a "Center Strand" because the remaining strands are twisted around it in the opposite direction.

SINGLE STRAND CABLE 1X19 cable uses a two layer construction (see drawing). The first layer consist of 6 wires twisted around a center straight wire.This becomes the strand center. The second layer is an additional 12 wires wound around the first layer in the opposite direction to make a complete strand. 1x19 cable will have 19 wires (1 strand x 19 wires = 19 total wires). IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STRAND CENTER AND CENTER STRAND. Multi strand cable uses a center strand not a strand center. 1-6-12 Two Layer construction becomes the strand center for 7x19 multi strand cable. Single Strand does not use One Layer construction.

MULTI STRAND CABLE 7x7 MULTI STRAND CABLE 7x7 cable uses one layer construction only. Each strand is made with Layer One of two layer construction only. 6 of these strands are twisted around a center strand (see drawing). There are 7 strands with 7 wires each for a total of 49 wires. 7x19 MULTI STRAND CABLE 7x19 cable uses two layer construction. In fact, if you were to unwind or separate the stands (7) you would end up with 7 1x19 strands. 7x19 cable will have 133 wires ( 7 strands x 19 wires = 133 total wires).
