STRAND CONSTRUCTION

This is strand Construction and not Cable construction. All snare cable is made of strands and all strands are made of multi wires. There are two distinct type of strand construction used for snare cable. 1x19 and 7x19 cable uses one type of construction (two layer) while 7x7 uses another type of construction (one layer). These constructions types are as follows:

  1-6-12 (Two Layer Construction)

Two Layer is constructed of 19 wires (1+6+12). This is used for 1x19 Strand (Stranded wire) and 7x19 Multi Strand wire rope (cable). The first layer consist of 6 wires twisted to the right around a single straight center wire. These 7 wires become the inner core of the strand. The second layer applies a series of 12 additional outer wires twisted around the inner wires in an opposite (left) direction. Two layer construction is a complete Strand for 1x19 Strand and 7x19 Wire Rope only. 7X7 cable does not use Two Layer construction! Remember "1x19" means 1 Strand and 19 Wires. On 7x19 cable there are 6 of these strands twisted around a center strand making a total of 7 strands of 19 wires each for a total of 133 wires. (click on drawing for larger view)

 1-6 (One Layer Construction)

One Layer is constructed of 7 wires (1+6). This is used for 7x7 Multi Strand wire rope . This construction is identical to Layer One of two layer construction with a variation in twist directions (see drawing). 7x7 multi strand wire rope (cable) uses a right twisted one layer construction as the inner core strand and 6 identical additional strands twisted left for the outer strands. This creates a total of 7 strands each having 7 wires for a total of 49 wires when completed. (click on drawing for larger view)
